Long tails usually refer to distributions with non trivial probabilities for values that lie far from the “center” of the distribution and have lots of implications for understanding fields from economics to counter-terrorism.
Short tails refer to distributions with very few or no values that lie away from the center of the distribution (for example a uniform distribution).
